Lake design
| Habitually, we describe all small ponds, large ponds and lakes as "ponds" except in these pages devoted to lakes and large ponds. |
Large bodies of water are simply so attractive that their design is always a pleasure. The scale of the large pond or lake that is being mooted must reflect the scale of its setting if its potential to delight is to be achieved. There is little point (wildlife benefit aside) putting a one acre "puddle" in the middle of a thirty acre field - it will look lost and be rarely visited by those walking in the grounds. The same one acre large pond in a four acre garden will, on the other hand, become the focal point of the garden and an attraction for all.

The design principles that apply, in general, to good landscape design also apply to lake design. The finished lake must sit appropriately in, and enhance, the landscape. In order to achieve this particular bit of magic, it is almost a certainty that some considerable landscaping works in the surrounding areas will be required as well as the addition of additional features and plantings in the adjacent landscape. (See boathouses, islands, jetties etc in related "Our Services" pages)
The construction of a large pond or lake (whether natural or
lined) may require that
planning consent is granted by the local authority and will,
possibly, involve input from the Environment Agency.

and
off-stream ponds)
From an engineering and aquatic ecosystem point of view, the demands of lake design are similar to but perhaps more muscular than those required by the creation of a smaller feature.
Our large pond and lake design and consultancy services are available nationwide.
